Today, Netflix released the first season of its highly anticipated new original series. It is the television adaptation of “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” a 13 book series that follows the tragic events of the three Bauldelaires children after their parents die in a house fire.

The first book of the original series, written by Lemony Snicket, came out in 1999 and was followed by twelve other books until 2006. The series sold over 65 million copies as of 2015 and received many literary awards.

In 2004 a movie adaptation was released; the film grossed $118,627,117. The movie was directed by Brad Silberling and starred Jim Carrey, Liam Aiken, Emily Browning, Kara and Shelby Hoffman, Jude Law and Meryl Streep.  The movie received one Oscar Award for Best Achievement in Makeup and got a 6.8/10 rating from IMDb, but the film was highly criticized for leaving many chunks of the book out.

The Netflix original series was first announced back in October of 2016 and immediately gained a fan following. This series stars Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf, Malina Weissman as Violet Bauldelaires, Louis Hynes as Kalus Baudelaires and K. Todd Freeman as Mr. Poe. The first season, eight episodes, has so far received an 8.9/10 rating from IMDb and has received positive reviews. The TV-PG series has, however, received criticism from some parents because of its dark tone and depressing themes.

Social media has allowed fans everywhere to express their love and appreciation for the series. #ASeriesofUnfortunateEvents has been trending on Twitter since the series was released on Netflix earlier today. Fans have already been asking about the next season of the series.

“We’re planning to do more, but we haven’t been greenlit to do more. But we already have scripts being written for the second season. We have the stages on hold, so we’re optimistic,” Executive producer and director Barry Sonnenfeld said.
