CFISD will be implementing new curriculum changes to the science and career and technical education (CTE) classes next school year. The district is set to restore 13 textbook chapters that were originally removed in 2024. These chapters include topics about human growth and development, cultural diversity, vaccines and viruses, among others.
During the CFISD board meeting on Feb. 9, the board members discussed how this would affect the curriculum next year. The course material will stay the same as it had previously, but there will be additional resources reinstated that the teachers can use to plan and teach their lessons.
School Board President Julie Hinaman addressed the curriculum changes at the CFISD Board Workshop on Feb. 5, where she said the topic had originally been brought to the agenda because of the growing concern from parents who wanted to make all textbook resources available again.
“This action will allow teachers and curriculum writers to fully utilize instructional materials as resources for high school science and CTE courses using elements of chapters previously removed,” Hinaman said.
Health science teacher Laura Anderson was impressed with how the district had written the curriculum so the removed chapters were unnoticeable. Even still, she says she is glad the chapters are going to be restored.
“[The changes allow] us to go into more depth on the topics, which I feel like are really valuable to a student’s education about healthcare practices,” Anderson said. “I feel like the school board giving us those back just has helped to make sure that the students are well prepared for their future careers.”
Principles of Education teacher Cassondra Harris says she wants to prepare her students to be flexible with changes, a lesson she has had to learn throughout her years of teaching.
“They’re making changes because with the world of education, things are going to always change,” Harris said. “You really can’t focus too much and get so wrapped up in it to where it consumes you. [You’ve] got to stay focused on what you can teach and what you are allowed to teach.”
