Cy Woods golf season begins in January

The Cy Woods boys golf team is competing in its first tournament of the season on January 16. This tournament will mark the start of the 2017 season. The tournament will be held in Spring, Texas at two locations: Glenloch Farms Golf Club and Augusta Pines Golf Club. The Cy Woods team normally practices at the Cy Lakes Golf Course, but Golf tournaments are held at courses across the Houston area. Tournaments can expect around seven or eight teams, as many as fifty athletes, and are also open to spectators. For Travis Edwards, a member of the Varsity golf team, it is the duality of winning in golf that is so enticing.

“[Golf is important to me] because it is a team sport, but you can also win individually,” Edwards said.

The golf season lasts 4 months during Spring. Last year the Cy Woods golf team made it to regionals, and Edwards has hopes to go even farther in this season.

“I am excited about being able to play and seeing if all my hard work has paid off,” Edwards said.

While this Tournament on January 16th is a boys tournament, the girls season is gearing up as well. Head coaches for the Men’s and Women’s teams are Coach Curtis Neil and Coach Ashley Ahlfinger, respectively. Coach Ahlfinger is proud of the camaraderie among the athletes.

“The boys and girls practice and tournaments are separate, but each are very supportive of one another,” Ahlfinger said.

For Coach Ahlfinger, it is the students who make for an exciting season.

“I’m looking forward to new players who are beginners that I can’t wait to see grow,” Ahlfinger said. “Our top returners have amazing things that they can accomplish this season.”
