Game Grades from Cy Woods V Cy Creek

BillyS, Staff Reporter

The Cy Woods Wild Cats, 1-4 (1-3 in District), dropped another one against the Cy Creek Cougars, 4-2 (4-1 in District), 40-35. The Cougars looked strong all game behind a potent screen attack that was responsible for most of their scores. The Wild Cats looked out of sync for much of the first half and were unable to pick up their play till very late in the fourth quarter in a failed comeback attempt that saw three scores in the second half against the Cougars one.

But it was not enough, and for the first time in Cy Woods history, through the first five games of the season, they have allowed at least 30 points in every single game and have allowed a total of 234 points. With that said, here are the grades from the contest.

Pass Offense: B-

Bryson Powers continues to look like a new Quarterback and makes mental errors that need to be eliminated in order to become a competitive team; errors like throwing the ball into a group of defenders with only a single receiver within 15 yards. Errors like turning to the wrong side to hand the ball off and having to improve the play. If he wants to be taken seriously, he needs to pick up his play, because currently, receiver Jared Taylor, who set a new record for longest play in Cy Woods history with a 94 yard TD, and Tre’ Hart have been bailing him out all season with their solid hands and lightning quick feet.

Rush Offense: C+

Running backs CJ Jones and RJ Harmon continue to go out and do their thing, but dropped balls and poor decision making plagued their game and saw a drastic reduction in numbers. Jones made a couple quick plays and showed off his speed as usual, but couldn’t do enough to pull the Wild Cats to a victory. Harmon looked a step slower than usual and couldn’t make as many people miss as he typically does. Both players need to step up their play and establish a leadership role on the team if they want to salvage the second half of this season.

Pass Defense: C+

The only word to describe the pass defense of the Wild Cats is “dismal” as they were ineffective against the screen and surrendered multiple touchdowns from beyond the red zone, a theme that has seemed to develop this season so far. Missed tackles doomed the defense and the normal stand out defender Brandon Deprato was invisible. The defense is missing the influence of Safety Miles Wilson and Defensive Tackle Toby Orundami.

Rush Defense: C

Not much was done to stop the run and the cougars moved the rock at will. Long running touchdowns sealed the fate of the defense in the second half and once again the missing players in Orundami and Wilson were felt by the whole team. The Wild Cats simply will not win games if this problem is not fixed. If they can shut down the run in the coming games, at least a little bit, they will force their opponent to become one dimensional through the air and then they can focus on the pass and totally shut down a team’s offense. However, for now, it starts with the run.
