The Oscars

Events and mishaps of the 2017 Academy Awards

Only the most prestigious and proclaimed actors and movies are celebrated on this night, and the Oscars are always a spectacle for the public.

Many of us have been anticipating the Oscars this year, as several amazing movies have made their ways to the top of our consciousness. Notably La La Land, which took home five of the twelve awards they were nominated for and almost making away with a sixth award in a Steve Harvey-esque mismatch mirroring the event we all witnessed with the Miss Universe pageant back in 2015. The call was initially made for La La Land to win Best Picture, but this all came crashing down when Jordan Horowitz, the director of La La Land, looked around and noticed a frantic crew shuffling around seemingly trying to find something. That something was the envelope with the correct information. Eventually it just “appeared”, as Horowitz said, and in the envelope was the award for the film ‘Moonlight’. Not too huge of a setback, considering La La Land still won more awards than any other film this year.

This mishap took center stage and left its legacy for the 2017 Academy Awards, a lighter and more laughable legacy. Many were expecting a politically charged Oscars to occur, with passionate speeches denouncing current politicians similarly to Meryl Streep’s speech at the Golden Globes.

The night went on rather unscathed, and many favorites reaped the rewards that had been anticipated. Zootopia won the best Animated Feature Film. La La Land won Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Cinematography, Best Directing, Best Music (Original Score) and Best Production Design. The White Helmets (a documentary about the civilian defense force in rebel-controlled Syria) won Best Documentary (Short Subject).

The Academy Awards will always be an emblem of the accomplishments of the movie industry, but there will also be moments like those of this year that emanate the reality that we aren’t perfect, even if we are put in charge of running one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the world.
