Quarterback Jackson Jones dodges a Cy Lakes defender as he runs with the ball during the second quarter.

On Saturday night, the Cy Woods Wildcats (now 3-3) defeated the Cy Lakes Spartans (now 0-6) at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium with a score of 31-20. The Wildcats initially had a slow start, allowing the Spartans to take a 8-3 lead during the first quarter, but they came back during the second quarter to take the lead and successfully maintain and expand it. This came at a vital time for Cy Woods after their 24-21 loss to Cy Falls last week and helped reinvigorate the team for their game next week against Cy-Fair. Until then, the Wildcats have some work to do.

First of all, the Wildcats need to work on their consistency during the entire the game. Throughout the whole season, Cy Woods has struggled to maintain their level of play during a single game. Usually, the Wildcats wrestle with this the most in the first half, especially in the first quarter. A game is four quarters, and the Wildcats must play all of them with the same intensity. Otherwise, they open up an opportunity for their opponent to score some extra points and possibly take the lead like what happened tonight during the first quarter. This can be solved by upping the  stamina of play in the first half.  This will be critical against the current runner-up in district, Cy-Fair, next week.

The Wildcats had some issues with just holding onto the ball. During the game, the offense fumbled the ball four times. Luckily, Cy Woods recovered all of them, but this could have proved disastrous for the team by giving Cy Lakes more chances to score. While this did not hurt the Wildcats too much, in the future, they could be far less fortunate, specifically against teams with a strong defensive line. This has not been an issue previously, causing this to be a curious phenomenon, so hopefully, it will stay as just a bump in the road. Either way, the Wildcats need to address this and make sure this does not become a future detriment.

Meanwhile, the Wildcat offense and defense were excellent in their scrambling and reaction to sudden changes during a play. Several times, one of the Spartan lines forced the Wildcats to quickly rethink their strategy during a play, and they were very successful in adapting to these changes and finding ways to still make it work. This led them to making two vital interceptions and preventing possible yard loss throughout the game. In addition, the Wildcats managed to readily respond to the four fumbles and keep the ball. If they continue to scramble so well, this will prove very important for Cy Woods against tough opponents in the final weeks.

Tonight was very crucial for the Wildcats to bounce back from their loss last week. Their win against Cy Lakes is key in the race for playoffs over the final weeks of the season. Hopefully, Cy Woods can use this momentum to defeat the Cy-Fair Bobcats next week and bolster their bid for playoffs. The Wildcats will be taking on the Bobcats on Saturday, October 28 at 1 p.m. at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.
