The popular consensus for “Dead Men Tell No Tales” is negative. From what I understand, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have lost their luster, and audiences are tired of this seemingly neverending series. With each new movie, the ratings have been on a steady decrease. Now, according to critics, the once successful franchise, is dead; the humor is repetitive and dull, the plot rides on chance and the characters are one-dimensional–Captain Jack Sparrow has lost his charm and solely relies on drunkenness for comedy.

At least… That’s what the critics are saying. I, on the other hand, have never seen a Pirates of the Caribbean movie before. Since this is my first viewing of the Pirates franchise, I was unable to relate to critics’ comments, so I went into the movie theater pretty open-minded about the premise of “Dead Men Tell No Tales”.

With nothing to compare it to, I found the movie to be fairly enjoyable–far from my favorite–but still a nice break from reality. It wasn’t particularly funny or memorable, and the storyline wasn’t original in any way, but the plot progression was done very nicely. Towards the end, the movie dragged, but overall, the producers knew what they were doing when it came to setting up the characters and plot, beginning to end.

My opinion is definitely shaped by the fact that to me, this is movie number one, not number five. Despite that, the movie didn’t leave me wanting more, and although this was my first movie of this series, it felt like my last.

I recommend this movie to anyone who has nothing better to do and wants to pass some time. I found it to be entertaining for the time it lasted, but don’t go into the cinema expecting a phenomenal movie or you will be disappointed.
