A Well Fought Battle

Wildcats lose a close battle on homecoming

Friday, the Cy Woods Wildcats (2-5 in district play) fell to the Cy-Fair Bobcats (6-1 in district play) with a score of 35-17. In what started out as a hopeful game, the Wildcats were playing strong going into halftime, and even into the fourth quarter, but soon, the Bobcats began to outplay and hold the Wildcat offense from scoring in the final quarter while slipping through the defense to score two touchdowns. Up until then, the Wildcats stayed fairly close to the bobcats with no more than a seven point difference. The Wildcats were expected by many to be blown out by the Bobcats, but they fought hard and rose to the occasion.

“Our kids fought their tails off,” Head Coach Trent Faith said. “That is all we can ask. They fought as hard as they could; it did not go our way.”

Coming into this game 2-4 in district play, the Wildcats had additional pressure to redeem themselves against the Bobcats and win the homecoming game for the school. This added stress can affect how a player, not only performs, prepares for a game.

“We took it to a whole new level knowing that it was the homecoming game,” senior Ryan Kenny said. “It was a must win for us obviously. We did not get the results we wanted. Leading into the fourth quarter, the Bobcats were ahead only 21-17 thanks to a stronger Wildcat defense than they expected, but the defense could not hold them off in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats were able to strengthen their lead over the Wildcats and constantly hammered them play after play

“The defense held them very well,” senior David Heskin said. “But we kept going three and out and not giving the players enough resting time.”

As every game goes by, coaches look for more and more ways to strengthen their team in all parts. The coaches hope to improve their offense for when they play the Cy Creek Cougars (3-3 in district play). More specifically, they want to see the offense take more chances when they see them.

“We have to convert on fourth and shorts,” Faith said. “We had several opportunities on fourth down, going into try to score, where we did not try to convert on.”

The homecoming game is considered one of the most important games for a team to win and a loss can spell disaster for a team and school’s morale for the rest of the season. Despite the loss of the homecoming game, players and coaches alike are walking away proud for their efforts against Cy-Fair.

“I could not be prouder of our guys,” Kenny said. “We fought hard. I can not ask for anything else. We need to keep playing this way.”
