On Thursday, January 14th the British actor Alan Rickman passed away from cancer at age 69. Most will remember Rickman as the iconic almost-hero in Harry Potter, but Rickman also left behind legacies in many other films such as Love, Actually and also Die Hard.

Though Rickman will be known to most as an actor, he was also an active philanthropist. He was very involved in organizations such as the International Performer’s Aid Trust, which is a charity dedicated to helping eradicate poverty for performing artists all over the world. In addition to this foundation, he was also involved with Saving Faces- an organization that helps individuals with disfigurements or diseases dealing specifically with the face or mouth.

Rickman died surrounded by friends and family, along with a loyal fanbase that continues to mourn him by placing a Lilies at the door to the Potions Classroom at Universal Studios, and laying multiple bouquets of flowers at the marker for Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross Railroad Station in London. Though Rickman has passed on, his final role will be his reprisal as the Blue Caterpillar in the spring blockbuster, Alice Through the Looking Glass.  Rickman will always be remembered as the actor with whom J.K. Rowling personally shared her biggest plot-twist with, and will forever live on in the hearts of loyal Harry Potter fans.
