HOSA
President Skyla Lowrance, 12
Q: What is your club about?
SL: “The concept of HOSA is to allow the students of Cy Woods to get more of an insight on what the health science field looks like in their future.”
Q: Why did you want to join this club?
SL: “I joined HOSA because my sister was in it when she was in high school. And I was like, OK, well I know I’m interested in health science. Let me just join that because I know I’ll like it. And I joined, I was like, hey, this is everything I thought it would be.”
Q: Where do you all meet?
SL: “We meet in Ms. [Laura] Anderson’s room in 2908.”
Q: How does the club work?
SL: “People get a new insight on what the world looks like by having guest speakers and having people get a different perspective of what the health science world looks like. And it’s not just a doctor or a nurse. There’s so many different things.”
Q: What are the requirements to become a member?
SL: “The requirements to be in the club is just if you have an interest in health science. Not really anything too specific.”
Q: What volunteer opportunities do you have?
SL: “Well, we always have blood drives, which you can volunteer to donate blood, but you can also volunteer to help out with that process. So you can just like go there, even if you’re not donating, because you have to be a certain age. And you can go and like, oh, hey, I’m going to bring you back to class. Or like, hey, do you need help carrying your backpack? Or hey, I’m going to help pass out waters. So that’s a good way to do it inside of school.”
Q: What leadership opportunities do you have?
SL: “We have two presidents, a senior and a junior. And we have a vice president. We have community outreach, two secretaries, and a competition chair.”
Q: What has been your favorite part of being president?
SL: “My favorite memory has probably been getting to be a president of all the new events. Like last year, we had the Power Gives Back thing, which is brand new. That was really cool.”
Q: What do you most like about the club?
SL: “My favorite part of health science is getting to care for people because I’m more of like a helper person. So if somebody feels bad, I want to immediately make them feel better. So that’s my main point of view.”
Q: Why should people join your club?
SL: “There’s nothing bad that will happen if you do join. There’s only good stuff that can happen. You just gain information on anything that you know. Even if you’re not interested in health science, you get to know stuff about the world around you and being like, oh, hey, I didn’t know that. That’s cool. And just, you know, it’s a fun club. You get to know everybody. Everyone’s really nice. And we do fun activities.”
