On the evening of October 1st, 2017 the Route 91 Harvest music festival was taking place outdoors on the Las Vegas Strip. At end of the night during country singer Jason Aldean’s closing performance, gunshots were fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel killing 58 people,  and leaving approximately 527 injured.

The gunman was identified as Steven Paddock, 64, a wealthy landowner originally from Mesquite, Nevada, who had no criminal record until Sunday night. Authorities are still trying to figure out the motive behind what is now being called the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

After the shooting, law enforcement officials discovered Paddock dead inside of his hotel suite with 23 guns. Authorities believe he acted alone, but still cannot seem to understand what prompted him to commit such a crime.

Paddock’s relatives say that he was estimated to be worth over $2 million. After collecting the rest of the money he’d made off of real estate deals and the business he and his brother sold, Paddock went into retirement and was said to have lived the rest of his days in solitude before coming to an end Sunday night.

Although Steven may have had a clean slate with the law up until the shooting, his father, Benjamin Hoskins Paddock, was on the FBI’s most wanted list in 1969, and was described as a man with psychopathic tendencies.

It is unknown whether or not Steven Paddock had the same tendencies as his father, had drug or alcohol problems, or was in debt. However, authorities are working tirelessly to figure out the real reason why such a gruesome event took place to begin with.
