The Cy Woods Wildcats (1-3 in district) lost a not-so-close game to the Langham Creek Lobos (3-1 in district), decided in the first half, by a score of 62-35. The Wildcats failed to stop the lobos air attack and allowed a score on all but one drive during the first half and Toneil Carter of the Lobos totaled 150 yards on the ground alone.

Secondary for the Wildcats looked weak, especially on the corners. There was a general failure to block Langham Creeks’ Praise Okorie who caught everything that came his way. The only time he did not catch the ball was when it was overthrown. However, there was a decent amount of pressure on the Quarterback coming from Cody Eggleston and Ryan Kenny that forced the Lobo Quarterback to scramble and have to move outside the pocket. The only problem is that every time the Quarterback did scramble, he gained 5-10 yards. Elijah Strang took it upon himself to bring down the Langham Creek offense and recorded five solo tackles out of his seven total.

Fellow Linebacker Neil Chambers recorded two sacks for himself and Collin Fewox took the only other sack for himself. Defense was an issue all game but in the third quarter, they came out strong and did not allow any points for the Lobos, but lost whatever momentum was shifting towards their side by giving up two touchdowns immediately in the fourth and it certainly did not help when Lobo pick six came late in the game. There were not a whole lot of bright spots on defense but the same players that play well, continued for the most part, to play well. Key defenders like Myles Wilson and Collin Fewox played their part but in order to win any games, the defense cannot rely on just a few players to step up. The defense needs to play as a unit and execute every single play to be competitive. Until that is done, they will continue to give up 50+ points a game.

The offense did manage to score points, but not nearly enough. There were times when the offense just looked dead. Quarterback Jacob Kainer tried to look for the deep ball, but was constantly under pressure and was forced to scramble. By the second half, Kainer was so used to being flushed out of the pocket that his first instinct at any sign of trouble became to try and rush rather than get the ball off. The Langham Creek Coaches recognized this and kept him contained most of the game, only allowing him 54 net yards on 14 attempts. Although, he did amass 262 yards through the air going 18-34 with three touchdowns but against three interceptions, most of which came off deflected passes.

Kainer found a plethora of receivers tonight (8) and the ball was being caught, but the receivers failed to get up field after the catch. There were of course improvements to be made, but the Langham Creek defense played top notch all night. Again Jack Barrientez totaled the most of all the receivers, this time with 59 yards, and was able to get past the line of scrimmage a few times for a couple 5-10 yard gainers.

CJ Jones made his long awaited return but stayed quiet. He failed to get up field when he ran and as a result was thrown down for a loss; staying under 100 yards rushing for the game, one of his career lows, but had 121 all-purpose yards. He did not quite look game ready after missing the last couple weeks, but expect a decent turn around for him in the next game against Cy Falls.

The Wildcats will have a lot to fix between the end of this game, and October 7th when they take on a run heavy Cy Falls.
