The Wildcats decimate a weak Cy Springs team

BillyS, Online Editor

On a hot and humid night on the brand new turf at Pridgeon stadium, the Wildcats (1-1, 1-0 in district play) found every possible hole in the Cy Springs defense and exploited it with profound exclamation…over and over again, finally winning 69-34. Jacob Kainer played perhaps one of the best games of his life to date going 15 of 29 passing with five touchdowns, four of which came off his legs, against only one interception.

“He is our starting Quarterback,” Head Coach Trent Faith said. “He grew up a lot as a player. He played physical and took control of the offense and did a great job.”

After coming off a pretty severe leg injury the previous season, Kainer is making his return known as a junior.

“We have always seen [the potential] in him,” Faith said. “It has just taken him a little bit to get some confidence playing on that leg and that it won’t get broken again.”

Kainer threw for 303 yards and rushed for an additional 128 for 431 total yards, an outstanding feat for a single player. Kainer was not the only one to have a big game though, with numerous runs of 20+ yards coming from the legs of running back Jack Barrientez. The running game seemed to work at will.

“Offensive line really blocked well for me,” Barrientez said. “They opened up the holes so I could make big plays.”

The second and third string players played an integral part in securing the win in the second half when the starters were taken out after the score read 55-21.

“The back-ups did phenomenal,” Barrientez said. “They stepped up, and in the future they just have to keep hitting the [opponents] hard to get better.”

A solid 116 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown from Barrientez gave the coaches enough faith to put in CJ Jones for a few plays after he was injured the previous game.

But it was not just the offense that stepped up their play. Allowing only 14 points up until the end of the third and fourth quarters when the second and third string were put in, they kept the Wildcats in control of the game for its entirety.

“We needed a lot of improvement from last game,” Troy Spears said. “We had a bye-week and we were able to work on a lot of things in that time.”

It was an important win for the morality of the team and a big effort from everyone on the field nearly guaranteed a victory. The whole team played big and did exactly as the coaches needed. The ball seemed to bounce in favor of the Wildcats every time.

I knew we could play like that since spring ball

“I knew we could play like that since spring ball,” Mario Trevino said. “We just needed to bring that out and I think we will next week again against Cy Ridge.”

The Wildcats face a mean looking Cy Ridge team that is studded with plenty of three and four star recruits. If the play that was shown tonight can be kept up for the remainder of this season, expect a big year from the Wildcats in district play. The game is set to be played Saturday, September 17th at Cy Fair FCU Stadium.
