Person of the Week: Garrett Henry

Cypress Woods student volunteers at hospital over summer

Over the summer many Wildcats used their time to volunteer for different organizations or clubs, but this Wildcat spent his days helping the sick in a hospital.

“I volunteered at Tomball regional hospital” Senior Garrett Henry said. “It’s not an internship the unit [wanted] to recruit volunteers under eighteen for.”

Henry used this opportunity to help shape future success in his life.

“You can make connections in the hospital for your future,” Henry said. “So if you volunteer at the rehab unit and want to be a physiotherapist later in life, people in the hospital [are aware you have] already volunteered. It is just extra brownie points if you want to pursue that career.”

Henry’s work at the hospital involved simple things like paper work to watching surgeons do their job.

“I would do all kinds of things from organizing closets to doing paperwork to talking with patients and playing games with them. I got to [watch] operations, push patients around in wheelchairs, basically anything the staff needed me to do.”

But the best part about the experience was getting to know the patients.

“I like to hear their stories,” Henry said. “Everyone has a story and there is a wide variety of life that walks through the hospital.”

The stories indeed left the biggest impact.

“I met one patient who was a corn factory engineer and had personally designed all the corn factories in Texas,” Henry said.

The biggest lesson Henry walked away with was how much dedication it takes to work for those in need.

“I have learned it is not just a job,” Henry said. “A patients attitude can really affect them getting better or not. I’ve also learned just how selfless employees are. They will even skip lunch to help other patients. It makes me feel amazing that I can help others, and give them a home away from home.”
