In a game with massive playoff implications, Cy Woods, 4-4 (4-3 in district) managed to turn the district upside down with their complete annihilation of rivals Cy Fair, 5-3 (5-2 in district) who had only given up about 700 yards on the ground to opposing teams coming into this match up. The Wildcats had nearly 200 in the first half.

The defense looked like a completely new unit out on the field and a pick by Brandon Deprato on Cy Fair’s first drive set the tone early.

“I think we just started believing in ourselves as a team,” said Head Coach Trent Faith. “We started settling in with what we wanted to do and the kids stepped up.”

Quarterback Bryson Powers picked apart the Bobcat defense the entire first half and accounted for 186 yards and three touchdowns through the air, and added another score on the ground, helping the Wildcats to a 30-0 score going into half time.

Running back CJ Jones managed for 186 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown before being taken out in the second half during garbage time. Usual red zone go-to running back RJ Harmon sat out for much of the game only seeing time on extra points due to bruised ribs suffered earlier in the week.

Defensive end Cody Eggleston recorded two sacks on the night as he tried to help shut down the previously potent Cy Fair offense. Eggleston led a vaunted defensive effort all game and saw extended playing time after an injury to starter Caleb Smith. He stepped up when he was needed.

“I’m really excited, it was amazing and it was all 11 of us out there really,” Eggleston said.

Inspired defense is the term to use on a game like this for the Wildcats. Coming into this game they had given up 287 points to their own 278. After only giving up a single touchdown early in the third quarter after botched pass protection, they sit at 322 for them against 294.

“We tell them we’re going 1-0 every week. One game at a time, one play at a time,” coach James Whitmore said.

This was the first time all season that Cy Woods hasn’t given up a single point in the first half to an opposing team. After being embarrassed 61-21 in the season opener against Klein Collins, the Wildcats are trying to set themselves up for a playoff run and if the defense can do again for the rest of the season what they did in this game, they will do that.

The Wildcats face off against bottom feeder, 1-6 Jersey Village on October 30th at Ken Pridgeon Stadium. The combined score of their last two opponents is 3-11. Put your seat belts on because it looks like the Wildcats are going for a drive.
