On Saturday Cy Woods, 1-3 (1-2 in District) faced off against a Battle tested Cy Ranch Mustangs, 3-1 (3-0 in District), in a newly famed, “Battle for 290” which saw a multitude of big plays from both sides and a tremendous lack of defense from the Wild Cats and an explosion of offense from the Mustangs.

Pass Offense: B

The Wild Cats have a new quarterback this year in Bryson Powers but he seems to be doing all right, for the most part. He has thrown a few too many interceptions off poor decisions, but leading receiver Tre’ Hart and company have helped capitalize on the right decisions he has made. Powers has a nice deep ball and it needs to be utilized more in order to help him grow as a quarterback.

Rush Offense: B-

CJ Jones and RJ Harmon together are a tag team virtuoso and a nightmare for opposing defenders. RJ will find a way through you, and CJ will find a way around you. Jones has the speed to take it to the end zone every single play if he can get blocks every once in a while. Harmon is reminiscent of a Marshawn Lynch type running back in that he runs a bit split legged to allow for mobility but he will drop his shoulder and put you on your back.

Pass Defense: C

There was little to no pass defense against the Mustangs and the main reason was poor secondary. Corners failed to cover the receivers and safeties failed to recognize deep plays and could not cover the middle of the field which seemed to be a favorite of the Mustangs. Linebacker Brandon Deprato was rendered ineffective due to the coaching around him by the Mustangs coaches. The Cy Woods coaches should’ve recognized this and started moving him around to let him do what he was born to do, make plays.

Rush Defense: D+

The Wild Cats looked as if they almost didn’t have a defense out there when it came to the run, zero defensive line ability and they were just thrown around by an absolutely massive Cy Ranch Offensive line. Linebackers couldn’t fit their gaps and there was no one on the edge to spill the lead blocker so the running back ran free all night and saw the end zone as many times as he wanted. A Mustang running back ran for a touchdown of more than 50 yards three times. The defense needs to find a way to fix this if they want to have a shot at playoffs.
